Knowledge: declarative, procedural, and contextual
In ministering to students it is important to reach them where they are and attempt to articulate and communicate knowledge in different ways.
The information and skills format is based on the belief that all knowledge can be categorized under three domains: declarative, procedural, and contextual:
1. Declarative knowledge is information, including facts, events, concepts, and principles, that the learner needs to know, not what the learner needs to do. Declarative knowledge requires an understanding of component parts. For example, mastery of the standard “understand the concept of profit margin” requires the foundational understanding of what profit margin is built on: variable and fixed costs, gross profit, markup, and so forth.
2. Procedural knowledge is what the learner is able to do with the information. It includes the skills and processes important to the content area. Calculating profit margins is important to the career pathways of Marketing, Sales, and Service; therefore, one procedural standard for this content area might be “knows how to calculate profit margins.”
3. Contextual knowledge goes beyond declarative or procedural knowledge to include information or skills that are, in part, defined by the conditions under which they are learned. In other words, contextual knowledge is new knowledge acquired during the act of doing something.

Defining Terms: What is Love?
When bringing this topic up how could a discussion be complete without Haddaway and a Night at the Roxbury? I fought it. It was impossible.
with that said…What is an accurate picture of love?
does dictionary.com give us an insight? Hollywood? Girl next door? My dog Spurgeon (future tense…when I get a dog, his/her name will be Spurgeon. Maybe Edwards. Maybe Piper. Maybe Calvin)
I think this would be a good definition of Love…. Read the full post »

Defining Bible “Arcing” and how it relates to studying the Bible
It is really hard to learn a new language, when you don’t even know your own.
When I was in seminary I took an 8 week Greek course-it was coined “suicide Greek” because of the intensity with which we studied. The schedule went something like this:
8-10am class
4 hours of homework per hour of class
REPEAT FOR 8 WEEKS!
I am in the process of learning a new language, Albanian, and all those challenges resurfaced. Whats an ad-verb again and when is it used? What does nominative, accusative and ablative case mean? Why does the English language have 1 personal pronoun usage for “my” compared to 24 usages of “my” in Albanian!?!
Language is important and becomes the means for us to understand Scripture rather than simply passing over clauses and paragraphs because we think we figured it out. This video is simply an intro but for detailed information on this exegetical skill learn it here.

Why do Christians believe in Cannons?
When we hear the word “canon” we often think of a weapon used in the revolutionary and civil wars of American or European history. And why are 18th century firearms important to my faith again?
Instead of cannon, my hope is to give a defense for the CANON of scripture and the evidence we have for believing its authority, truthfulness, and power.
How do we know that THESE 66 belong in what we consider the “Holy Bible”. Why these 66 and why not others? Will there ever be more added later? What is a “cannon” again?
The most important idea and what is very UNIQUE about the grouping of BOOKS in the BIBLE is that it starts and ends with GOD. It was GOD who determined these books, man simply discovered it.

God’s Word-say what?!
(insert standard stock photo of the scripture to be super spiritual)
What in the world is meant by “the WORD of GOD”? Is that Christianese? Does it only mean the BIBLE?
When people use that phrase what usually comes to mind is:
Word of God= reminiscent of “sword drills and CEF”…
Use it in a sentence—“pull out your Word of God”.
Word of God= God literally just said something to me, Blam!
Use it in a sentence—“THUS SAYS THE LORD…”
Word of God= thus says the Lord from some prophet
Use it in a sentence—“The prophet Isaiah said… (b/c God told him to)”
Word of God= Didn’t Jesus say something about this…John 1?
Use it in a sentence—“In the beginning was the word. And the word was with God and the word was God…and the word became flesh and dwelt among us.”
Why is this so important again? Read the full post »

Live and Let Live…
This mans bringing it for Christ and it encourages my faith to listen to his music as I walk around the city everyday. May God use his new music to encourage your faith too.

Our new adventure in Kosova!
Please subscribe to our new adventure that began in September and will continue for at least one year. My wife and I will be spending this year partnering with a church in a country in Eastern Europe called Kosova where we will be working with Bashkësia Ungillore e Mesisë (Messiah Evangelical Church). Our goal is to continue to build the bridge between our home church, Richfield Community Church and the B.U.M church (an unfortunate acronym!).

Let the Nations be Glad- changing the perspective
It is hard to believe but my wife and I will be leaving for Kosova and the question is raised- what is the purpose, goal, and price of missions in the world. How do you even define what missions is?!?! Can you not understand the New Testament till you understand and come at it from a missional perspective? Well, that might be going a little far, but over the next few weeks I want to explore John Piper’s book, Let the Nations be Glad, not because it is something fresh and new to the world, but it is fresh and new to me. It has been highly recommended as a great place to start to answer these questions.
THe book was a very familiar John Piperish book about the sovereignty of God, but you cannot help but be blown away at the simplicity of his opening statement. He says, “Missions is not the ultimate goal of the Church. Worship is. Missions exists because worship doesn’t. Worship is ultimate, not missions, because God is ultimate, not man. When this age is over, and the countless millions of the redeemed fall on their faces before the throne of God, missions will be no more. It is a temporary necessity. But worship abides forever”.
It seems like an incredible redefinition of an understanding of world missions. We aren’t going to evangelize the heathen, we aren’t going to “bring” Jesus in response to the question-got Jesus?- but instead truly bringing people to the reality of the glorious God and come to a recognition of the supremacy of God and a great place to start on this journey of growing in an understanding of global missions.
Highly recommend this book in brooding your understanding of global missions and if for nothing else, hearing incredible stories over and over about great men and women who have sacrificed their life for God’ glory. Man has forgotten them, but God knows them by name and used them as conduits of his grace to the nations. Piper redefines missions, expands on terms that are unclear like frontier and missionary, nations, and unreached people groups and does so on the basis of scripture alone. He exegetes certain texts in order to draw conclusions rather than the other way around.
Two thumbs up and highly recommended regardless if you are thinking about missions or not for your future. If you are, then it is a must read!

The 9-5 Pastor
What does a full time ministry even mean? When we look to the early church it seems that they were “bi-vocational”. After leaving Philippi Paul traveled to Thessaloniki. Paul tells us in 1 Thessalonians how he labored in the gospel and specifically with his hands, but we also see how scripture supports pastors being taken care of and financially compensated for their service in the gospel so it begs the question whether modern day pastors are doing what they did then? How do pastors spend their time? I think the average perception of the church clergyman is correct- they are lazy! I was convicted today that I consider this is 9-5 job.
What does it take? Read the full post »
